it hangs on jQuery(document) telling me jQuery is undefined. I believe this is because the method is called before the script is fully loaded...

If you try to use the standard $(document).ready() calls, they sometimes work and sometimes dont, depending on if jQuery is loaded or not.
I made a sandbox solution that loads jQuery (from either a document library, google or microsoft) in the "head", allowing you to use the standard "ready"calls.

Just something to add. Most companies dont like referencing the Jquery files if they are hosted somewhere (MS, GoogleAPIs), so most people end up hosting it locally.
I managed to get that working by adding a Sharepoint Mapped Folder for Layouts\JqueryInclude and then replacing your Sharepoint Body onload function with this :
_spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames.push('loadScript(\'/_layouts/JqueryInclude/jquery-1.4.2.min.js\', runScript)');
This works 100% for me.

Want to add though, this template is brill. Just what I need for our school VLE. Once I get it working properly, I'm going to try the content approval option for the list so we can look at making it available to students (Maybe just 6th form first). We don't let them have access to social networking sites via the school network, but this cold be a nice compromise.
Also, our VLE is a hosted solution so being able to add something like this without touching the server is ideal.

This is calculated by using the parseDate() embedded in the default.aspx file and the getRelativeDate() in ths _JS/Utilities.js file.
I threw in some alerts and it appears that this issue is due to the list iteme being inserted to the Messages list with the wrong date and time.
For example I just added one at 10/23/2009 7:57 AM (MST) and the list item says 10/23/2009 4:57 PM
It thinks it's 9 hours from now.
