OfficeRocker is Rocking Again

My old mate Darren Strange aka OfficeRocker (Off-His-Rocker, get it? get it? Oh man he was proud of that blog name) has returned to his blog after roughly an 8 month absence. Really great to have his insights on the world of Office popping back into my feed reader.

His return post, titled “How to stop blogging and how to start again” is one I can really relate to, as most of 2007 was a blogging wasteland for me. I really enjoyed myself from 2004 to 2006, and then something happened, I got blocked, and only after some time out did the fun return. The readers of course can take a little longer! <grin>

To get an idea of what you can expect from the OfficeRocker blog check out some of his hits (and misses!):

Death by PowerPoint - Giving better presentations
Go SharePoint and good things happen
When presentations go wrong and how to recover afterwards

Anyway, Darren, great to have you back in the blog world, but of course things never stand still, I expect to see you in Twitter very soon, and following me at http://twitter.com/danmc.

Lets keep in touch.

SharePoint Best Practices Conference UK – We Will Be There!

Its really great to see Europe host a top self SharePoint conference like the European SharePoint Best Practices Conference, and we (myself, Mark and Robin), certainly wouldn’t miss an opportunity to learn and connect with people like:

I’m also hoping to see you there, so please be sure to drop me a line if you are going, daniel@zevenseas.com, or come along to one of my sessions (I’m really excited to be part of the conference):

BA404 - SharePoint, the Social Computing Platform - Daniel McPherson
An in-depth look at using SharePoint to build “Social Applications”. Want to build YouTube for your organisation? Flickr? Delicious? Want to create your own Facebook style Newsfeed? This session will demonstrate how one company has done just that, and how you can do it inside your organisation.

BA408 - How can your organisation create an online community around its products and services - Daniel McPherson
This question is one of the most important an organisation can ask itself today. The unprecedented audience of the Internet, and its infinite diversity, means that there are people out there who are truly passionate about the product or service your organisation provides. Finding them can be difficult, but it's not impossible. In fact they are probably looking for a way to connect to you already. Do you know who they are? Have you established a connection with them already? Are you helping them find each other? Are you helping them connect with others who share the same interest? Have they already done all this themselves? We will help you answer many of these questions.

Looking forward to seeing you, going to be a great few days!

VS 2010: ClickOnce Deployment for Office Solutions comes to SharePoint

Everyone is, of course, on the lookout for any morsel of information about the next version of SharePoint and Visual Studio. I found a little SharePoint related news in some information about Visual Studio 2010 and thought I would just post it up here for anyone interested:

From: http://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2009/01/10/office-client-developer-enhancements-with-vs-2010.aspx

Publish to SharePoint

When we introduced ClickOnce deployment for Office solutions with Visual Studio 2008, you could easily publish solutions to a Web site, UNC share, or CD/DVD media.  With VS 2010 you’ll be able to publish documents to SharePoint servers as well.  This means that you no longer have to manually upload the document to SharePoint and maintain a network location from which the assemblies are installed when the document is opened.  Simply select a SharePoint Document Library as an option in the publish wizard and the customized document will be added to the appropriate document library; the assemblies will be stored on the SharePoint server itself.  This eliminates the requirement of having both a SharePoint server and a UNC share for deploying document solutions to SharePoint.

StackOverflow: A new SharePoint Community taking shape?

Over the last 3-6 months I have had an interesting time following a really innovative new developer “questions and answers” site emerge at StackOverflow. It’s been interesting because the site, put together by Jeff Atwood, of Coding Horror fame (always a *great* read btw), and Joel Spolsky (of Joel On Software fame) have been both very transparent (thanks to their great Podcast) and really innovative.

The primary objective of their site is only to be the best place on the internet to get answers to developer questions. I have to say, my experience with the site indicates that they are, if not there, then certainly on the way. The site itself sits somewhere in between a Blog, a Wiki and an Xbox 360 game, and it’s a fantastic case study in how software should be designed with human psychology in mind.

What do I mean? Well, there a many interesting elements to the site, but the one that has attracted the most attention is their concept of reputation points. Like all good ideas, this isn’t new, but its application has been done with great care, and in a way that I think really drives people to get the most possible value from their site. This is especially the case when these points are combined with “Badges”, or for your Xboxers out there, what you would refer to as “Achievements”. Whenever you do something on the site, like answer a question, vote on an existing answer, or post a question, you get a certain number of reputation points and you may also get a badge, for example “Editor” or “Teacher”. The badges come in different types, indicating the relative difficulty in achieving them, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Overall, this system combines to provide a positive feedback loop that, on the surface, appears really geeky, but can actually be really addictive!

Anyway, the reason this has landed on my blog is not just because I think there are some great ideas here that could be applied to the social software (like our blogging platform) we are all building on SharePoint, but because I have seen steady growth in the number of questions posted with the “SharePoint” tag, and there are some really good ones.

So, if you haven’t yet checked it out, may I suggest you head on over to StackOverflow and take a look around, you really wont regret it!

Thanks Jeff and Joel!

Anatomy of a SharePoint Solution: Eating our own Dogfood

Eating our own dogfood? During my days at Microsoft I was always eating dogfood, and I really miss it. Now, this doesn’t mean I was tucking down on Pal Meaty Bites, it meant that I was using our software everywhere I could, often before it was even released. In this way we were finding problems before our customers did and getting real world feedback on how to improve it.

Well, given my “Anatomy of a SharePoint Solution” blog series, I felt it was about time we started eating our own dogfood at zevenseas. So, it gives me great pleasure to announce the launch of the new zevenseas Blogs Home page.
