Everybody’s talking about an AppStore for SharePoint

But there’s already one out there, and has been for over 12 months.

Produshare (http://www.produshare.com)

If you have solutions you would like to put in a store, drop me an email daniel@zevenseas.com.

We’ve done an incredibly lousy job of telling anyone about it, but we released it to deafening silence somewhere around March in 2009. The cool thing about it is that it works today, with SharePoint 2007, with BPOS, with Themes, Assembly-Free solutions and Web Parts like the Data View Web Part and Content Editor. To be clear, the store works with plain, vanilla, out-of-the-box SharePoint, nothing needs to be installed on SharePoint for this to work.

The most innovative thing about our store is that its not just a list of product that you can browse through and then download, its a store that knows SharePoint how to talk to SharePoint. Why is that important? Because it means that after you have told us a little bit about yourself, and your SharePoint sites, we can install the solution, directly into your SharePoint sites with just a single-click.

Our goal was to make it as easy to use as the Apple AppStore, and I don’t think we have done too bad, at least as far as the technology is concerned. To be clear though we ran out of steam, so the experience is not quite where I would like it to be. That said, here are a few screen shots so you get the idea.

Try it out, it feels like magic!
I’m also more than happy to give online demos.

There are already a couple of solutions there for you to play with (twitter and a time sheet), but this brings me onto the reason I’m writing now. We think the whole AppStore idea for SharePoint was a little ahead of its time last year, in fact BPOS wasn’t released and very few people were aware of what could be done with Javascript and the Web Services. A lot has changed since then, and so over the last couple of moths we have been revisiting and renovating the storefront.

Call to action

Think of Produshare as the V0.9 Proof of Concept release for what we have coming very soon (new name, new UI and new features). Try it out, and most importantly, if you are someone with some cool solutions, and want a way to try and turn your software development skills and ideas into a professional pursuit, then drop me an email: daniel@zevenseas.com to have a chat about how we can work together.

While you are looking at our store, take a look at “TunnelPoint” too, its a BDC for SharePoint in the Cloud.

TeamTalk Now released For SharePoint RTM (Twitter for Teams)

It took us a little longer than we expected, but we just fixed the bug associated with building the TeamTalk solution on the SharePoint Beta. For anyone running SharePoint 2010 you can now download the solution here.

Download TeamTalk

image

On the left you can see a steady stream of messages from anyone who is a member of this team site, on the right you have your 140 character message composer, and below that, a list of any messages sent directly to you.

Installation is very straight forward and has been tested on the SharePoint 2010 Beta Only.

Installation

1. Download the “TeamTalk 2010” solution file

2. Upload the solution file into the “Solution Gallery” of a site collection where you would like to host a “Team Talk” site.

image

3. Activate the solution.

image

4. Create a new site, select the “TeamTalk 2010” template.

image

Done!

There are two ways to add pictures to a persons updates:

  1. Complete your MySite profile by uploading your picture
  2. If you are just using SharePoint Foundation, then add a new column to the “Users and Groups” table called “PictureUrl” (Single line of text). Each user can then modify this property, adding a URL to a picture of them, and you are ready to go.

We are committed to fixing bugs and moving this forward based on your feedback, so please don’t hold back. You can give feedback right here on this blog post, or if you want a direct response, email me: daniel@zevenseas.com

zevenseas and Rapid Circle, Better Together

I’m very pleased to announce that zevenseas and Rapid Circle are joining forces!

The last 4 months have seen an enormous number of changes at zevenseas, however this is probably the biggest and best of them. It all started at this years “SharePoint Connections” conference, where Wilco Turnhout got down to some serious talking about Social Computing. Somewhere along the way, we got to thinking that the strengths of our two companies were incredibly complimentary.

zevenseas has developed a strong technical reputation, both locally (Robin just became an MVP), and globally (with 4 international conferences lined up starting with the UK). Rapid Circle has a strong reputation for creating innovative business solutions that ensure people collaborate more effectively, more and more often on SharePoint.

By combining forces we are able to bring greater resources to bear on engagements allowing us to do more, particularly in the area of Social Computing, where both companies have been passionately engaged! (Blogging Solution, Discussions, Twitter, Social Bookmarking, etc).

Mark and Robin moved into the very cool Rapid Circle office this month, and I’ve been spending time in there leading up to my departure from Europe.

Yes, thought I would sneak that in, that is the other big change. I was never going to be staying in Holland forever, though I didn’t think I would be leaving it for Pune, India, but that’s exactly what I’m doing. Over the past 9 months we have been building out a talented team of SharePoint experts, and I decided I wanted to be part of the team that releases some great new Social solutions for SharePoint.

So, nothing ever stays the same, but that’s not the important bit, the important bit is making sure the changes lead to something bigger and better than what went before. On this point, I know this is a change for the better.

Evolution Conference UK – I’ll be there

I’m lucky enough to be heading off the the UK next week for the SharePoint 2010 Evolution conference, running from 19th to the 21st in London. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, get a jump on!

I had a fantastic time there last year, the line up looks even better this year, and I’m sure the Combined Knowledge crew will do their typically fantastic job ensuring it is one of the best organised conferences I had attended.

Announcing TeamTalk 2010 Beta for SharePoint 2010 aka ‘Twitter for Teams’

Download TeamTalk 2010

We’ve been big Twitter fans at zevenseas, in fact it has been 3 years since I first jumped in (@danmc, 27 December 2006 according to http://www.whendidyoujointwitter.com/). We have found it a great way to connect, and more importantly, stay connected with SharePoint people around the world . It’s not only a great way to get questions answered, but allows you to let people know what you are working on and provides a forum for the sort of unexpected learning that you used to get around the water-cooler in the office.

Just under a year ago we launched an “Assembly Free” solution for SharePoint 2007 called “Team Status”. It demonstrated the important features of twitter running entirely within SharePoint, and further, it did it without the need to install anything on the server. It proved to be one of our most popular posts ever, had lots of downloads, and some from the community even grabbed it and made it better.

When 2010 came out, we immediately saw the opportunity to make our solution even better. With 2010 “Assembly Free” solutions are going mainstream, this is thanks mostly to the brand new, elegant and super powerful Client OM. This initial version we are calling TeamTalk is a port of our previous Team Status application, but using the SharePoint 2010 ECMAScript library.

The best bit is that we have our first beta version ready for you to download.

SharePoint On Your Phone

Mark Bower had a nice post today, I didn’t see it in all the announcements flying by, however SharePoint has pride of place along with the Xbox on the new Windows Phone 7 Series.
